PATHWAY TO PARAWINGING
Parawing Foiling is one of the newest and most exciting developments in the foiling world. Combining elements of wing foiling, downwind foiling, and kite design, parawinging allows riders to use a lightweight ram-air wing to get onto foil before packing it away and surfing the ocean's energy.
For many riders, parawinging represents the next evolution of foiling. It opens the door to longer downwind runs, endless swell connections, and a uniquely free feeling that sits somewhere between wing foiling and pure downwind foiling.
WHAT IS PARAWINGING
Parawinging merges the dynamic elements of wing foiling, kite foiling, and downwind foiling. Riders control a compact wing, reminiscent of a paraglider, while gliding on a hydrofoil board.
The Parawing: Unlike an inflatable wing, a parawing inflates using the wind itself. This creates a lightweight, compact design that can be folded away while riding.
Pack Away and Glide: The defining feature of parawinging is the ability to stow the wing once you're up on foil. This allows riders to focus entirely on reading swells, linking bumps, and enjoying the glide.
A Natural Progression: Most riders enter the sport from a background in wing foiling, downwind foiling, or other foil disciplines. A solid understanding of foil control and ocean conditions will significantly shorten the learning curve.
WHY PARAWINGING
Unlock More Ocean: Parawings make it easier to access offshore bumps and connect swells over longer distances than ever before.
No Paddle Required: Parawinging removes much of the physical effort traditionally required to get onto foil for downwind riding.
Lightweight and Compact: Without inflatable bladders or rigid frames, parawings pack down incredibly small and travel easily.
Pure Glide: Once the wing is packed away, the experience becomes all about the foil, the swell, and the connection between them.
Rapidly Evolving Sport: Parawinging is one of the fastest-growing foil disciplines, with equipment and techniques improving every season.
HOW IT WORKS
The Parawing: A lightweight compactable wing, designed more like a kite than a handheld wing but with shorter lines. Optimising both performance and ease of use.
The Foil Board: Most riders use dedicated downwind boards or efficient wing foil boards paired with larger glide-oriented foils.
Deployment: Riders launch the parawing to capture the wind, gain lift, and effortlessly ride the swells or waves downwind without exhausting effort.
Hands-free riding: Once airborne, the parawing can be stowed away, freeing you to fully immerse yourself in the energy of the ocean and the joy of your ride.
GETTING STARTED
Build a Foiling Foundation: We strongly recommend having prior experience in wing foiling, downwind foiling, or another foil discipline before learning to parawing.
Practice on land or the beach first: Master the essentials of launching, controlling, and safely stowing your parawing before taking to the water. This foundational practice will set you up for success.
Choose the right Equipment:
Parawing: Opt for smaller wings in stronger winds for better control, and larger wings in lighter conditions to maximise your performance.
Board: Higher-volume downwind or foil boards make learning easier.
Foil: Larger, efficient front wings help create early lift and maximise glide.
SAFETY FIRST
Wear Appropriate Safety Equipment: Always use a helmet, high vis impact vest or PFD, board leash, and any additional safety equipment suitable for your location.
Understand the Conditions: Wind strength, swell direction, currents, and distance from shore become increasingly important when riding offshore.
Master the water start: Gain confidence by practicing your launch technique in shallow water. This step is crucial before tackling the swell.
Progress gradually: Begin with short downwind runs and gradually build your endurance and skill for longer distances. Celebrate each milestone along the way!
PARAWINGING IS A JOURNEY
Like all foil sports, progression comes through time on the water. Every run teaches you more about wind, swell, timing, and efficiency. The beauty of parawinging is that once everything clicks, the parawing almost disappears and all that's left is you, your foil, and the ocean beneath you.
